Renter FAQStraight answers about rent, compatibility, and help-supported housing
Everything you should know before you send a first message - and how to bring up affordability support without it feeling awkward.
How is fixed rent set?
Hosts set their own monthly rent based on the room, private bath, utilities, and any furnishings. Listings show the full amount up front. There are no bidding wars, no surge pricing, and no hidden platform fees layered on top of rent.
What does compatibility actually mean here?
You fill out a short lifestyle questionnaire (cleanliness, noise tolerance, social level, sleep schedule, pets, guests). We score each host against your answers and show a match percentage plus a breakdown so you can see where you align and where you differ.
How does scheduling a meeting work?
After you acknowledge a host's rules and expectations, you can start a conversation and propose a meeting - video first, then in-person. Everything is timestamped and stays in the platform so both sides have a record.
How do I politely ask about income-based affordability support?
Say it plainly. A message like 'I saw you're open to a rent discount in exchange for light household help - could we talk about what that could look like?' is exactly right. Hosts who opted in expect the question. Never send unsolicited offers of money, cash, or gifts.
What is 'light household help' - and what is it not?
Light help means non-medical, low-risk tasks a good roommate could pick up: grocery pickup, light cleaning, cooking a shared meal, laundry, taking out trash, tech help, occasional rides, evening company. It is NOT personal care, medication management, medical transport, heavy lifting, live-in caregiving, or on-call overnight supervision.
Can I combine a discount with a paid rent portion?
Yes. Many hosts prefer partial rent plus a few hours a week of help. Both numbers - the reduced rent and the hours of help - belong in your written arrangement so nothing is left to guess.
What if the arrangement stops working?
Every arrangement should include a notice period (30 days is standard) and a way to escalate concerns. If something feels off - hours creeping up, tasks changing, boundary issues - report it in the platform. Do not renegotiate under pressure.
How is my information protected?
Your full profile and contact details are only visible to matched, verified members you actively engage with. Public listing pages never expose renter identities. See our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
